Everybody Is Not Going to Like It: Rule of 10
This is something that everybody gotta learn when they are creating anything: books, movies, art, videos…etc. Everybody is not going to like your ish. This is where the Rule of 10 comes in.
3 people: Are going to love it.
3 people: Are going to hate it.
4 people: will be indifferent/not care either way.
At this point in my career, I’m truly dead set on focusing on the three people that will love my work because the three people that hate it, will hate it over something so trivial. (“Oh my God, why did you make her bald head? Why did you make her light skin? Why did you make him light skin? Nobody’s mom is that crazy (as if they have met everybody’s mama in the whole world) A normal person would have had them locked up. Oh my God, this is unrealistic.”) The list can go on and on. I’ve heard it all.
Sometimes authors can lose sight of the reason why they write when they focus on the three people that’s going to hate their work anyway. Sometimes, I feel like some people read some people work just to say they hate it and give no other reasons why. That’s why I always tell people to take low ratings with a grain of salt.
Love Belvin once said, “We authors get caught up when readers complain about how the story ‘should’ have been written and lose the handle of our pen and sight of the gift. This work here is to satisfy me first. If you enjoy, too, great. If not, I’ve already been fulfilled.”
Anyways, write what you want to write. Love what you write. Feel what you write, and don’t worry about the people who don’t like your work, because everybody ain’t gon’ like it anyway. Remember, The Rule of 10.
